Note: some of these apply to everyday life as well!shutterstock_131355116.jpg

Here are some pointers that will help you gain confidence and have a more enjoyable experience at a dance studio. I wish I had been informed of some of these pointers early in my career, it would have saved my dance partners some frustration and me tons of embarrassment.

  • How not to be that guyWear deodorant (It doesn’t really last 24 hours, so make sure you reapply or shower if possible before you dance).

  • Make sure you get around the room and dance with as many ladies as possible. It’s the best way to meet new people and make more friends.

  • “May I have this [insert dance name here]?” is the proper way to ask a lady to dance. Don’t just stick out your hand and say, “Wanna dance?”

  • Make sure that you introduce yourself to each partner.

  • Ask your partner how long she has been taking dance lessons, so that you know what moves to lead her through.

  • Always walk your dance partner back to the place in which you found her.

  • Thank your partner for dancing with you at the end of every dance.

  • Don’t be a “cling on” and try to dance with only the instructors or advanced dancers.

  • Don’t sneeze or cough in your hand and then ask a lady to dance with that germ ridden hand.

  • Screen_Shot_2016-08-04_at_12.15.12_PM.pngDo not sweat all over her. If you’re a “sweater” use paper towels and dry yourself off in between dances.

  • Did I mention that you should wear deodorant?

  • Wash your hands.

  • Make sure your breath is minty fresh. If she offers you a mint, take it as a hint.

  • Do not to eat onions, garlic, fish or anything that would be offensive to the people you will be dancing with. (Last night’s dinner will be expelled in today’s sweat).

  • Wear clean underwear (just kidding) or am I?

  • Never let a lady take the blame for your mistakes.

  • Always be gracious.

  • Compliment your partner.

  • Smile and make eye contact.

  • shutterstock_117149824.jpgIt’s ok to ask a lady with a partner to dance, but you must get her husband’s/partner’s permission first.

  • It’s OK to make mistakes, but it’s not OK to act like a baby if you do mess up.

  • Don’t be a show off. Nobody likes a cocky show off.

I can list many more pointers, but I think this is a good start. If you can think of any more please share them with us.
