One of those rewarding new experiences is dancing. Taking dance lessons may not seem like a shortcut to happiness at first, but as soon as you get into the swing of things (see what we did there?), we’re willing to bet you’ll find yourself smiling much more. Not only are dance lessons fun, but they can also help you meet new people, lose weight, and become more outgoing. It’s never too late to learn something new, which is why we highly suggest taking adult dance lessons if you’re ready to take charge of your life and pursue happiness.

Which ballroom dance classes are best for adult beginners?

Adult dance classes 1Though we teach many different ballroom dances at all five of our New Jersey locations, there are certainly some types of dances that are best-suited for beginners. Here are some of our top picks for easy ballroom dances to learn when you’re a beginner:

  • Rumba: This Latin dance dates back some 400 years ago, and is better known as the Latin “Get-Acquainted” dance or the dance with the wiggle. Romantic and popular, the Rumba sometimes substitutes for those in-between tempos, featuring a relaxed lateral hip motion paired with Latin styling. Once you learn the simple but catchy Rumba, you’ll be ready for more moving in no time.

  • Foxtrot: In its most basic form, the Foxtrot uses walking steps and side steps. If you’re on a crowded dance floor, you’ll have to use smaller steps, but in larger ballrooms, the slow Foxtrot is characterized by longer, gliding steps. These smooth steps have an ease of movement and control, giving this dance an unhurried appearance.

  • swing dance classes 2 (1)Swing: You may have heard of the Lindy Hop—that’s what swing dancing was first known as, in honor of Charles Lindberg and his historic hop across the Atlantic). Coming to popularity in the 1920s, this dance re-emerged on the East coast during the WWII years earning the names Jitterbug-Jive and Swing (West coast). A true American amalgam, this dance combines the steps from the Black Bottom, the Bop and Push, the Hustle and Boot Scoot, Shag, Charleston, and the Hop.

  • Waltz: Also known as the “mother of all dances,” the Waltz originated in Italy in the 1600s as a round dance called the Volte. It made its way to America in the early 1800s and was the first social dance in which a woman was actually held in a man’s arms. It’s a great first dance to learn—the Waltz is elegant, helping you develop graceful movement and poise. Plus, many wedding receptions and formal social affairs often include the Waltz, so you’ll have plenty of chances to show off.
  • Cha Cha: Using the “chasse,” or triple steps, and rock steps, the Cha Cha is a simple dance that everybody can learn. It’s derived from the Rumba and the Mambo, making Cuban-style motion the most important aspect of this dance.
