How Can I Become a Good Dancer?

In every person’s life, there is a moment where you decide that you’ll never not know how to dance again! The wedding where Aunt Sally dragged you out on the dance floor and lead YOU through her version of the jitterbug…in front of all the guests.  The club, where you were overlooked by the hot salsa dance guy because the “amazing dancing girl” standing next to you made him look good on the floor and you slipped and fell when he tried to turn you. Or how about just being the constant purse holder at every dance function, event, cruise or business gala because you’re too embarrassed to get up on the dance floor? Does any of this sound familiar?

You’ve had it! The last straw! You look at yourself in the mirror, point at the reflection and say “You need dance lessons and you need them now!” And, you’ve never been more right. But now you’re stuck wondering “How can I become a good dancer?”

Admitting there’s a problem is the first step, so, congratulations! Step 1 completed.

Second, call your nearest Arthur Murray Dance Studio and schedule your first lesson. 103 years of experience are pretty good betting odds that they know what they’re doing.

Third, submit to the process. Learning to dance when you have no experience can seem overwhelming. It’s like learning a brand new language with a brand new alphabet! Trust your teachers and follow their guidance. After all, they’re good dancers and they’ve already been through the process. Yes, they all started from scratch at one point too.

Fourth, practice practice practice! That’s what those group and party classes are for! Practice moving over and over again with lots of different partners! Dance with everyone! The more you dance, the better you get. Shhhh, that’s the secret. Don’t tell anyone.

Lastly, keep it going. Don’t give up when the going gets tough.  Learning to dance comfortably can take anywhere from 6 months to a year. But after you learn some basics, you’ll have it for the rest of your life!

Now when the next family wedding comes around, you can grab Aunt Sally and spin her around in front of all the guests! Or go to that Salsa Club and have ALL the hot salsa guys spinning you around all night! And the next time someone hands you their purse to hold as they get up to dance, place it gently on the table, grab that person and get up and dance!
